It may be that I’m just not looking in the right places, but it’s not often that I see the genres of folk and EDM merged together, nor did I ever really have the desire to. But Mojo Filter has changed that with his edit of/tribute to Swedish folk group Junip’s “I’m Alright”. If the name Junip sounds only vaguely familiar, you may be more familiar with their lead singer, Jose Gonzalez, known for his solo covers of “Heartbeat” and “Teardrop”, among others. On this track, Mojo Filter takes the airy sweetness of Gonzalez’s voice and lets it float on top of a tropical beach house beat that Mojo calls “Folkno!”. The song alternates between periods of almost ambient waves and periods of trance-like synths, a difference which works to keep the track interesting and new for its entire 6:40 duration. For me, the best part of this song is the way in which Mojo is able to capture the melodic essence of Gonzalez’s voice in the production, so that even while this remix is almost nothing like the original, the listener can still feel elements of Junip’s soulfulness shine through.
